At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured in Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past 24 hours. The strikes, which involved missiles and drones, targeted multiple regions including Kharkiv, Kyiv, Odesa, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Donetsk, and Sumy.

A Russian guided aerial bomb struck a multistory apartment building in Kharkiv, injuring at least 35 people, including 10 children. Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that search-and-rescue operations had ended with no one found under the rubble. In the broader Kharkiv region, six people were killed and 12 others injured when a cruise missile hit an agricultural enterprise.

In Kyiv, ballistic missile strikes killed two people and injured eight. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a woman and two 16-year-olds were among those injured and hospitalized. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated a separate drone strike in the capital killed one man, and that three people were killed in the southern Zaporizhia region.

Attacks extended across the country. Two people were injured in Odesa region where a shopping mall, private houses, and a hospital were damaged. In Kherson region, drone attacks and artillery shelling killed two and wounded five, damaging numerous buildings and infrastructure. One person was killed and 13 injured in Donetsk region, including in Kramatorsk. In Sumy Oblast, a 51-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were killed by a guided missile, and a 32-year-old man died in a drone attack.

The Ukrainian air force reported Russia fired two 'Zircon' missiles and 174 drones overnight, with air defence forces neutralizing 141 targets. The latest barrage came just a day after another series of attacks on September 27 that killed eight people across Ukraine.

Ukrainian Counteroffensive and Russian Strikes

Amid the assaults, Ukraine reported defensive successes and territorial gains. The defense forces claimed to have retaken 51 square kilometers of territory and captured over 250 Russian troops. They also liberated three more villages in the northern Donetsk region on September 28. Russia's Defense Ministry had not commented on these claims but stated its forces had struck Ukrainian logistics and port infrastructure.

President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, saying they showed Russia has no interest in ending the war. He stated Moscow launched nearly 4,000 drones, aerial bombs, and missiles against Ukraine in the past week. In a separate incident, Ukrainian drones struck an oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar region, causing a large fire, according to open-source analysis. Both sides deny targeting civilians.

International Reactions and Diplomatic Stalemate

The escalating violence unfolded against a backdrop of stalled diplomacy. At the United Nations General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated, "Moscow intended to continue its military campaign 'to the end'." United States-led talks to end the war have failed to produce a breakthrough, and the UN has highlighted the growing civilian toll.

The attacks had regional repercussions. Poland activated its air defence measures and scrambled military aircraft in response to the Russian drone incursions. The conflict's human cost was further internationalized with the death of an Azerbaijani citizen in the Kyiv region, a fact confirmed by Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

Ukrainian forces continue to clear debris in Kharkiv while reporting the capture of hundreds of Russian soldiers on the battlefield.
