The Israeli army has admitted to opening fire on a vehicle carrying 5-year-old Hind Rajab and her family in Gaza. This admission comes after a review of the case, and the Israeli Defense Forces (FDI) have announced that they will be opening a criminal investigation.
Hind Rajab's story is one of desperation and tragedy. She was trapped in a vehicle with her family in Gaza, and her voice was the only link to the outside world. In a recorded phone call, Hind can be heard begging for help, saying "the tank is next to me, it's moving". The operator, Rana, tried to keep her calm, but Hind was terrified, asking if someone would come to get her.
The Family's Ordeal
Hind's family had been trying to escape the intense bombing in their area. They decided to head to the Ahli Hospital, which they hoped would be a safer place to take refuge. Hind's mother, Wissam, and her older son began walking, while Hind and her other family members got into their uncle's car, a black Kia Piccanto. However, as they drove, they came under fire, and the family was attacked.
The family called the Palestinian Red Crescent emergency center, which is located 80 kilometers away in Ramallah. The operators tried to keep Hind calm, telling her to hide under the seats and not to let anyone see her. However, despite their efforts, Hind and her family were unable to escape the danger that surrounded them.
The Tragic Outcome
Days later, Hind's body was found, along with those of her family members and the two paramedics who had been sent to rescue her. The paramedics' ambulance had been attacked by Israeli tanks, and the vehicle was found destroyed, with bullet holes and a shattered windshield. The Palestinian Red Crescent has accused Israel of deliberately targeting the ambulance, despite having obtained prior coordination to allow it to reach the scene.
The Israeli army has not commented on the specifics of the incident, but has said that it is investigating the matter. The rules of war state that medical personnel and vehicles must be protected and not targeted, and that wounded individuals must receive the medical attention they need. Hind's mother is now demanding accountability for her daughter's death, saying that she will question those who failed to rescue her before God on the Day of Judgment.
